Freelance Writing Websites and Resources

These are a few freelance writing websites and books that I found very helpful when I started out:

Freelance Writing Websites

Freelance Folder
Freelance Success
Freelance Writing
MediaBistro
Writing-World
Writers Weekly (A good resource if a publication refuses to pay)

General Freelancing Website

Freelance Work Guide

Freelance Writing Blogs

Dollars and Deadlines
The Urban Muse

Freelance Writing Books

Six-Figure Freelancing by Kelly James-Enger

Writer’s Digest Handbook of Magazine Article Writing by Writer’s Digest

Writer’s Market (A new edition of this resource is published yearly)

Finding Expert Sources

ProfNet
ProfNet is a free service for writers. After you create an account, you can post a query stating the kind of expert you are searching for. Experts, or their PR representatives, will then contact you directly with more information about their expertise. One caveat: ProfNet requires that you be on assignment before you can post.

Help a Reporter Out (HARO)
HARO is a lot like ProfNet in that writers are able to post their query for experts. Again, HARO is a free service and many writers (including myself) have had success finding sources through HARO.
