Freelance Copywriting
Many freelance article writers (myself included) also offer freelance copywriting services.
You may be wondering what freelance copywriting is exactly. In a nutshell, freelance copywriting is when a writer works with companies, organizations, or individuals to provide written content, mostly for marketing purposes. You may hear copywriting referred to as business writing, corporate writing, or commercial freelance writing.
With freelance copywriting your words must really pack a strong sales punch! When writing articles your aim is to inform, entertain, and even inspire readers. With copywriting your aim is to sell products and services.
Freelance copywriters work on a variety of projects including (but not limited to) annual reports, eBooks, landing pages, catalogs, direct mail, advertisements, and sales letters.
For example, as a copywriter (both freelance and on staff) I've written website copy, press releases, newsletters, email messages, and brochures for non-profit organizations and universities. I approached finding freelance copywriting clients the same way that I targeted editorial clients by focusing on the areas that I had direct work experience. I worked at a non-profit arts organization and this experience naturally helped me land copywriting clients. I was able to pitch myself as a non-profit copywriter as well as a copywriter with expertise in the arts. This led to me writing web copy for several non-profits and even a college arts program.
To further expand my potential client list, I took my college writing credits and pitched other colleges and universities. I've also written many articles for a trade magazine called Minority Nurse. So I combined my experience writing about nursing with my experience writing for colleges and universities and picked up work writing newsletter articles for a university nursing program.
The key when starting out is to look for ways to pair your experience and knowledge with potential copywriting clients. All businesses and organizations need writing to communicate with their customers and clients. That means that there are limitless opportunities for copywriting jobs out there. And with so many print publications slashing budgets or closing shop completely, adding copywriting services to your writing business is a smart move.
