About the Author

My name is Denene Brox and I am the webmaster of Freelance Write Now! I've also been earning money as a freelance writer since 2005.

I had always dreamed of becoming a writer and being published in magazines. After I graduated from college with a liberal arts degree in African American Studies, I quickly realized that landing a job at a magazine, newspaper, or PR firm as a writer was not going to happen. Afterall, most companies require a degree in journalism before they will even consider you for a full-time job. So I got a job at a bank instead.

Then in 2003 I attended a Christian writer's conference on a whim and one of the speakers conducted a workshop on freelance writing for magazines and newspapers. I was so intrigued with his presentation that I could not wait to learn more about freelance writing. I was excited and amazed that I could live my dream of being a published writer without going on job interviews or racking up massive debt getting a second degree in journalism. I was sold on freelancing and couldn't wait to dive in.

I bought some books on freelancing and toyed around with writing queries to editors at my favorite magazines. But nothing happened until 2005 when I decided to try and sell some articles to a budget travel magazine called Transitions Abroad about my trip to Italy to study Italian language.

To make a long story short, I sold my first story to Transitions Abroad in the fall of 2005 and I haven't looked back. In my six years as a freelance writer I have been published in more than 30 magazines and websites including Heart & Soul, Minority Nurse, MyBusiness, Yahoo!, Monster, and Bankrate.com. I've also dabbled in copywriting gigs for colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations writing marketing materials and website content.

Why This Site?

I wanted to create a complete online guide to starting a freelance writing business for beginners so that they could find all of the ins and outs of freelancing all under one roof. There are a lot of websites out there about freelancing and the information overload can become overwhelming. My hope is that Freelance Write Now provides visitors with the information and inspiration they need to get published and earn money as a freelance writer from the comfort of their homes! I have written the information in what I hope is a friendly and accessible way so that readers feel encouraged and confident.
